Case Study
THE ASSET VECU-STOP® AND ASSET EUROTRACC SYSTEMS

CLYDESIDE EXPRESSWAY
VAN RESTS ON CRASH CUSHION
A safety and lighting upgrade contract on the Clydeside Expressway, adjacent to the Scottish Exhibition Centre, has recently been completed by W. I. Gilbert under a contract managed and supervised by Glasgow City Council.
A risk assessment undertaken by the client identified two key hazard areas, which could not be adequately protected using conventional safety barrier products.
With the introduction of BS EN 1317 - 3 : 2000 performance classes, impact test acceptance criteria and test methods for crash cushions, engineers were in a position to specify a suitable system at these two locations. ASSET VECU-STOP® crash cushions give a range of solutions, from tapered cushions through to parallel type. All are tested against BS EN 1317 - 3 for both head on and side impact.
The first cushion was installed on its pre-formed base in less than half a day at the busy Ferry Road roundabout. Within a week the cushion had been struck by a transit van, the driver escaping without injury. A replacement section of cushion was then installed within an hour, thus restoring the protection afforded by the system to its full working standard - a clear endorsement of the decision to incorporate this safety measure within the scheme.
