KINGSTON BRIDGE

TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT PROBLEMS SOLVED AT ONE OF EUROPE’S BUSIEST RIVER BRIDGE CROSSINGS

Glasgow’s famous M8 Kingston Bridge over the river Clyde consists of 10 lanes. Carrying over 180,000 vehicles a day, the Kingston Bridge is one of Europe’s busiest road bridges.

A PERMANENT SAFE SOLUTION

Strengthening work was first carried out on the Kingston Bridge in 1994 and since then, plastic cones and concrete blocks (TVCB’s) have been used to close one lane and segregate the local traffic flows.

A permanent solution was needed to open up the remaining local access lane, provide containment capacity for future works and give sufficient lane differentiation to ensure traffic flow remained undisrupted by vehicles merging across lanes. Glasgow City Council appointed ASSET International to design, supply and install a permanent barrier system using ASSET VARIOGUARD® steel barrier.

Installed in 2002 the barrier has prevented many accidents. Traffic flow on the bridge has been increased due to the presence of the barrier.
