MULTI APPLICATION SAFETY SYSTEM (ASSET MASS)

M6 JUNCTION 12, A5 ROUNDABOUT

ASSET MASS safety barrier was selected by JDM Accord to provide increased workforce safety protection on the A5 / M6 junction 12 roundabout resurfacing project. Due to the high volume of heavy traffic, a relatively tight radius curve, coupled with narrow roadways and concern over operator safety steered JDM Accord to look beyond traditional cones and planking to provide a safer working environment.

The busy two-lane roundabout over the motorway had one road section closed off at a time to allow the bridge deck waterproofing to be removed and replaced. ASSET MASS base units were mounted unfixed to the road. Due to the unique ASSET MASS curved base shape, the steel barrier provided roll-on / roll-off stability when an errant vehicle drove onto the base. Articulated lorries and rigid vehicles constantly clipped the barrier without damaging or moving the safety system.

Site Manager Dennis Wilson added “The ASSET MASS steel barrier system saved us time and hassle. We knew when we left the site at night that the barrier would still be standing and doing its job properly the following day, even if it was nudged by a lorry”. Workforce personnel reported how much safer they felt working behind the ASSET MASS steel barrier system compared to cones and string!

The ASSET MASS application for workforce protection at this site, gives an example of Best Practice within the terms of Health and Safety at Work requirements.

Individual ASSET MASS base units are 150cm long x 50cm wide x 42cm high and each weigh 48kg. The short length of each unit enables tight curves to be accommodated whilst retaining rigidity.
